How To Remove Odors From Carpet

Life can get pretty smelly. Between kids, cats, dogs, and everything else, there are odors all around. Carpets are the most susceptible surface in your home to absorb odors. Soft surfaces are made of fibers and fabric, so they retain odor more than hard surfaces. You’ve probably tried everything. Vacuuming, air-freshening sprays, and candles. Nothing seems to work. We’ve got some tricks up our sleeve about how to remove odors from carpet. So, read below to find out the best ways that we’ve found to remove those perpetual odors.

3 Tips On How To Remove Odors From Carpet

Baking Soda & Essential Oils

Baking soda is a popular deodorizer. There’s a reason that so many soaps, deodorants, and detergents have it as a main ingredient. So, here’s the best DIY carpet deodorizing method that we’ve found.  Grab a large, empty spice container with shaker holes. Be sure to rinse it out well and let it dry so you don’t put seasoning on your carpets. Now, pour 1 cup of baking soda in the container and about 60 drops of lavender essential oil. Next, close the lid, and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds. Let the mixture dry for 24 hours.  Before you use the baking soda-lavender mix:
  1. Vacuum all of the carpets and rugs.
  2. Sprinkle the powder all over the carpets and rugs.
  3. Let the mixture sit for at least 24 hours.
  4. After 24 hours, vacuum it up. The smell-absorbing power of baking soda will work alongside the fresh scent of lavender to leave you with fresh carpets and rugs.
Pro tip: You can also try this on plush or fabric sofas, chairs, car seats, and car carpeting.

Make A Vinegar & Water Solution

White vinegar is a classic household cleaning product for a reason. It’s natural, safe, and effective. We suggest mixing 1 cup of vinegar with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle for this tip. Spray the solution all over the carpet and rugs. If the carpet has become wet, turn on some fans to prevent mold and mildew growth. Once it dries, the smell should be gone.

Kitty Litter & Baking Soda

Kitty litter is designed to absorb cat smells, so this should help absorb carpet smells. Don’t get ahead of yourself, though. We’re not suggesting that you need to sprinkle kitty litter on the carpet. That’s not a good idea. Kitty litter is difficult to remove from a carpet and will make more of a mess than it’s worth.  We suggest mixing equal parts kitty litter and baking soda in large plastic containers. Place the containers throughout your home, and change out the litter regularly. You can also purchase kitty litter that’s already infused with baking soda
