When it comes to area rugs, oriental rugs are considered to be the “Cadillac.” These beautiful rugs are statement pieces that often last generations. Made of natural fibers like wool, cotton, and silk, they require special care. We often see incorrect products and methods used on these rugs, leaving them stained or ruined. So, what is the proper way to go about oriental rug cleaning?
What Not To Do
The first thing you’ll need to know about oriental rug cleaning is how NOT to clean them. Depending on the material, certain cleaners are not safe to use. Many household cleaners contain bleach, which will discolor the fabric and damage the fibers. Even non-bleach “carpet cleaners” can actually do more harm than good, and we do not suggest using them. We also cannot recommend steam cleaning, dry cleaning, or washing machine cleaning, as this will permanently damage natural fiber rugs.
Spot Cleaning At Home
While we always recommend professional cleaning, you may be able to clean a small spot or stain on your oriental rug. Spills should be handled immediately, before they have a chance to set in. Gently blot up liquid with a dry cloth or paper towel, without rubbing. Then make up a solution as follows: 1/4 cup white vinegar, 1/2 tsp liquid dishwashing detergent, 2 cups tepid water. Most dyes used on oriental rugs are acid-fast, so the acid in the vinegar works to keep dyes from bleeding. Be sure to check in an inconspicuous area before cleaning your stain. Dab the cleaning solution on gently with a rag, avoiding scrubbing and disturbing the pile too much. Follow up with a damp sponge over the area, again dabbing gently. Allow to air dry.
